The President of Uganda is the head of state in Uganda. The role began as a largely ceremonial position, with the Prime Minister holding the true power. The first president was the king of Buganda, due to the power of the monarchist Kabaka Yekka party. In 1966 Prime Minister Milton Obote suspended the Ugandan constitution and became both Prime Minister and President. From this point on the Presidency became the most powerful office in Ugandan politics.

Die zweite Wahl entsprechend der Verfassung am 12. März 2001 mit einer Wahlbeteiligung von 70,3 %. Die dritte Präsidentschaftswahl fand am 23. Februar 2006 statt. Nach einer Verfassungsänderung, die zum einen die bisherige Beschränkung des Präsidialamtes auf zwei Amtszeiten desselben Amtsbekleiders aufhob, zum anderen aber die Abkehr vom Movementsystem und damit zu einer ersten Parteienwahl seit 25 Jahren ermöglichte, wurde Yoweri Kaguta Museveni mit 59,28 % im Amt bestätigigt. Die Stimmanteile die auf seine Herausforderer entfielen entschlüsseln sich wie folgt: Kizza Besigye (FDC) 37,36 %; Ssebaana Kizito (DP) 1,58 %; Abed Bwanika (Kandidat ohne Parteizugehörigkeit) 0,95 % sowie Miria Obote (UPC) 0,82 %. Die nächste Präsidentschaftswahl findet voraussichtlich im Frühjahr 2011 statt.

La nuova costituzione, approvata nel 1995, prevede l'elezione diretta del presidente. Le prime elezioni presidenziali del 1996 videro una partecipazione del 72,6 % del corpo elettorale.. Alle elezioni del 2001 partecipò il 70,3 % dell'elettorato.. Le elezioni del 2006 furono precedute da una modifica alla costituzione che eliminasse il limite di due mandati per il presidente. D'altro canto il sistema fu aperto ai partiti politici.
