The current sponsors are Whyte & Mackay who succeeded Holsten having signed a three-year contract to support the event in October 2007. The prize fund will rise from £265,000 to £340,000 in 2008 - with the guaranteed minimum of £20,000 (previously £15,000) for each player that qualifies. The top prize of £100,000 matches the prize of the 2008 PDC World Champion. Phil Taylor has dominated this event, winning four of the five competitions to date. He went unbeaten throughout the first three seasons before James Wade ended his 44 match run in the first match of the 2008 season. A new champion will be crowned after Mervyn King defeated him in the 2009 semi-finals. Wade defeated King 13-8 in the final, to pick up the £125,000 first prize.

In deze Premier League spelen alle acht deelnemers tweemaal tegen elkaar waarbij ze eenmaal 'uit' en eenmaal 'thuis' spelen. Het toernooi vindt plaats op veertien donderdagavonden die verspreid zijn over het voorjaar. De Holsten Premier League Darts wordt gespeeld op evenzoveel locaties in heel Groot-Brittannië, waarbij er iedere speelavond vier wedstrijden op het programma staan. De eerste zes spelers van de PDC-ranking zijn automatisch verzekerd van deelname aan dit toernooi, de overige twee spelers worden op basis van 'speciale prestaties' aangewezen door de dartbond. Nadat ieder darter veertien wedstrijden heeft gespeeld en de competitie feitelijk afgelopen is, volgt er een play-off-systeem waarbij de bovenste vier spelers zich via een een-tegen-een wedstrijd (1 tegen 4 en 2 tegen 3) in de finale kunnen spelen. Daarin wordt in een 'first to 16 legs' uiteindelijk uitgemaakt wie zich de winnaar van 'Premier League of Darts' mag noemen en er met de hoofdprijs van £75.000 vandoor gaat. Vanaf 2010 zal er mogelijk een speeldag in Nederland en/of Duitsland worden gehouden.

Turniej zdominował Phil Taylor, wygrywając wszystkie cztery dotychczasowe edycje imprezy. Przez pierwsze trzy sezony przeszedł bez porażki, mając serię 44 zwycięstw. W pierwszym meczu edycji 2008 pokonał go James Wade.
