Als eerste pogingen begin jaren 90 in deze richting kunnen enkele AFX aangewezen worden, alsmede de maxisingle "Industrial folk songs" van Cylob. Ook in Detroit worden de drumcomputers vaak door distortions gehaald door onder andere Cybersonik en Richie Hawtin, maar dat blijft bij enkele experimentele platen. Een grote aanjager was het nummer "Quoth" van Polygon window. Dit was een zijproject van Aphex twin met experimentele elektronica. Op het album "Surfing on sine waves" stonden voornamelijk ambient nummers, met uitzondering van het nummer "Quoth" wat volgens verhalen volledig bestond uit samples gemaakt op scheepswerven. Dit nummer kan als blauwdruk van de latere Rhythmic industrial beschouwd worden. Het genre kreeg pas echt vorm toen het Duitse Ant-zen label in 1995 de CD "Signum" van het project P.A. L uitbracht. Deze CD werd goed ontvangen, en de nummers "Gelobnis" en "Concrete rage" sloegen keihard in op de Electronic Body Music en Gothic dansvloeren in Europa. Hierdoor geïnspireerd gingen vele acts zich bezig houden met Rhythmic industrial. Naast Ant-zen kwamen er labels bij als Hands productions, ad noiseam en pronoize. Muzikaal bestaat rhythmic industrial uit ritmes en geluiden uit drumcomputers, die door distortions en effecten extreem vervormd worden. De muziek is sterk ritmisch en nauwelijks tot niet melodieus. Qua geluid komt het hard tot zelfs apocalyptisch/verwoestend over. Zonder overdrijven kan gesteld worden dat dit een van de hardste muzieksoorten uit de geschiedenis van de muziek is. Door de extreme dansbaarheid en enorme impact is het desondanks tegenwoordig vrij populair aan het worden.
