- Postgraduate education (or graduate education in North America, sometimes described as quaternary education) involves studying for degrees or other qualifications for which a first or Bachelor's degree is required, and is normally considered to be part of tertiary or higher education. In North America, this level is generally referred to as graduate school. The organization and structure of postgraduate education varies in different countries, and also in different institutions within countries. This article sets out the basic types of course and of teaching and examination methods, with some explanation of their history. In some programs in the traditional German system, there is no legal distinction between "undergraduate" and "postgraduate". In such programs, all education aims towards the Master's degree, whether introductory (Bachelor's level) or advanced (Master's level). The aim of the Bologna process is to abolish this system.
- Ein postgraduales Studium ist ein Studium, das ein vorhergehendes erfolgreich abgeschlossenes Studium (in der Regel grundständiges Studium) voraussetzt. Ziel eines postgradualen Studiums ist in der Regel ein weitererer akademischer Grad, kann aber auch die Weiterbildung ohne weiteren akademischen Grad oder die Vorbereitung auf eine ergänzende Staatsprüfung sein. Der Begriff entstammt den englischsprachigen oder entsprechend inspirierten Bildungssystemen. Er geht auf das englische Verb „to graduate“, dessen moderne Bedeutung das Erwerben eines Abschlusses meint, und das lateinischen „post“ in der Bedeutung „nach“ zurück. Die Zulassung, Betreuung und Studiengebühren von Postgraduierten unterscheiden sich in aller Regel von denen der Erststudenten. Einige akademische Institutionen wie z. B. das Europäische Hochschulinstitut werden ausschließlich von Postgraduierten besucht. Eine mögliche Organisationsform sind Graduiertenkollegs.

Ce cycle correspond au deuxième et troisième cycle universitaire canadien (troisième cycle, en France). Les diplômes du cyle postgraduate sont certaines maîtrises (M. Sc. , M.A. , M. Phil. , M. Res. ) et les doctorats. À la différence des diplômes du cycle undergraduate, il n'y a pas de distinction entre ordinary degree et honors degree.
