Veniva considerato come un "guitar hero" dalle sue parti, e forse proprio per questo motivo uscì dalla lineup nel periodo in cui i Cure esordivano discograficamente con l'album Three Imaginary Boys del 1979, poiché a quel tempo gli altri componenti della band, specialmente Robert Smith, ricercavano un suono più spartano, lontano dalle sperimentazioni e dai virtuosismi che Porl era in grado di fare. Dopo essere uscito dalla band studiò al College of Design del West Sussex fino al 1981 e in seguito suonò con vari gruppi tra cui gli Exotic Pandas. Si riunì alla band nel 1983 per suonare il sassofono in alcune parti del disco The Top rientrando così in pianta stabile nei Cure sia per quanto riguarda il pianeta live che quello da studio. Nei tour successivi suonò per i Cure chitarre e anche occasionalmente le tastiere. Porl ha suonato in 5 album di studio che sono The Top (anche se limitatamente alle parti di sassofono), The Head on the Door, Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me, Disintegration e Wish ed in quattro live album che sono in ordine ', Entreat, Show, Paris ed è ovviamente presente anche nei video dei live di questo periodo, cioè The Cure in Orange e Show. Porl e il disegnatore Andy Vella sono i fondatori della Parched Art, che ha prodotto molte delle copertine e degli artwork che riguardano i Cure, molte delle quali sono state disegnate e dipinte da Porl personalmente. Porl lasciò la band nel 1993 principalmente per dedicarsi alla sua famiglia e all'altra sua grande passione: la pittura, ma in quello stesso anno fu chiamato a suonare con loro dai suoi miti: Jimmy Page e Robert Plant; la collaborazione durò per tutto il tour ed anche per l'album di Robert Plant Dreamland. Ha fatto anche parte degli Strange Sensation, la band di supporto ai lavori solisti di Plant (uscendone nel 2005 subito prima della pubblicazione del loro primo album Mighty Rearranger) e dei Babacar, la band fondata dall'ex-compagno nei Cure Boris Williams, per il loro unico album omonimo.
