- Pop Idol was a British television series which debuted on ITV on 6 October 2001. The show was a talent contest to decide the best new young pop singer (or "pop idol") in the United Kingdom, based on viewer voting and participation. A second series was broadcast in 2003. Pop Idol was replaced in 2004 with The X Factor. The Idol series has become an international franchise, although a legal dispute with the makers of Popstars meant that the word "Pop" had to be excluded from the title. - Pop Idol war ein vom britischen Fernsehsender ITV produzierter Gesangstalentwettbewerb, bzw. Castingshow. Zwischen 2001 und 2003 wurden zwei Staffeln produziert. Das Konzept stammt vom britischen Produzenten und Spice-Girls-Schöpfer Simon Fuller. Am 9. Februar 2002 gewann Will Young das Finale der ersten Staffel. Das Finale sahen fast 14 Millionen Zuschauer – die höchste Zuschauerzahl für ITV an einem Samstagabend seit zwei Jahren. - Idols is een talentenjachtprogramma op televisie van de Nederlandse commerciële zender RTL 4, dat in het najaar 2002 van start ging. Dit programma is een Nederlandse versie van het Britse programma Pop Idol. In het programma wordt er gezocht naar nieuw zang talent. Het was tot 2010 de beste bekeken talentenjacht uit de Nederlandse geschiedenis. Vanaf 2011 zou dit The Voice Of Holland worden. X Factor en Popstars evenaarden hun voorloper niet. Binnen vijf afleveringen bereikte het programma een kijkdichtheid van twee miljoen kijkers per aflevering. Na het eerste seizoen werden er nog drie seizoenen uitgezonden. Daarna besloot RTL 4 meer te investeren in X Factor dat beter scoorde dan het laatste seizoen Idols. Idols zegt het beste zangtalent van het land te kunnen ontdekken, waar het publiek op kan stemmen. Met behulp van televoting kan het publiek thuis bepalen wie er uiteindelijk met de titel: "Idol" naar huis gaat. Het publiek heeft tot op heden: Jamai Loman, Boris Titulaer, Raffaëla Paton en Nikki Kerkhof (in chronologische volgorde) tot Idol benoemd. De kandidaten worden geselecteerd door een panel van juryleden die de performances van de finalisten bekritiseren. De vier oorspronkelijke juryleden waren talentscout en producer Henkjan Smits, songwriter en producer Eric van Tijn, zangeres en directrice van Stichting Buma Cultuur Jerney Kaagman en artistmanager Edwin Jansen. Na enkele seizoenen werden enkele plaatsen ingenomen door songwriter John Ewbank en zanger Gordon Heuckeroth. De serie werd door de seizoenen heen gepresenteerd door Tooske Breugem, Reinout Oerlemans, Chantal Janzen, Martijn Krabbé en Wendy van Dijk. Het programma genereerde in 2002 flinke inkomsten voor de producenten, door sponsorcontracten, merchandising en doordat kijkers tegen betaling konden meestemmen per telefoon en sms.
