- The Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Goiás (Pontifical Catholic University of Goiás, often abbreviated as PUC-Goiás) is a private and non-profit Pontifical catholic university, located in Goiânia (headquarters) and Ipameri, is the first university of the State of Goiás. It is one of the largest and most prestigious Brazilian universities. It is maintained by the Catholic Archdiocese of Goiânia. Founded on October 19, 1961 by the Sociedade Goiana de Cultura, a non-profit foundation maintained by the Catholic Archdiocese of Goiânia, PUC Goiás is the oldest higher education institution of the state and of the Central-Western region, preceding in two months the foundation of UFG. According to INEP, PUC-Goiás is the second best university in the state of Goiás, behind only UFG. In 2009, Polish Cardinal Zenon Grocholewski, 69, prefect of the Congregation for Catholic Education of the Vatican, one of the most important collaborators of Pope Benedict XVI. The visit is part of the Cardinal lineup in honor of 50 years at the Catholic University of Goiás (UCG). "As the first institution of higher education in Central Brazil, the UCG has promoted a great development and dynamism in this region," he said. Renowned University of Pontifical Right, the UCG will be the seventh institution in Brazil with a similar title and 31st in the world. Five years ago the university began the process to become PUC, which will cause the institution now has an ecclesiastic bond not only with the local bishop, but also with the Vatican. Thus, all decisions must come from the pope, who appointed and qualified, including the Grand Chancellor and Provost of the institution. De acordo com o Guia do Estudante da Editora Abril (2010), foram concedidos estrelas a 24 cursos da PUC Goiás, dois receberam cinco estrelas: Biomedicina e Psicologia. Na categoria quatro estrelas, foram nove cursos: Administração, Arquitetura e Urbanismo, Ciências Aeronáuticas, Ciências Contábeis, Direito, Engenharia de Produção, Fonoaudiologia, Pedagogia e Serviço Social. Outros 16 cursos conquistaram três estrelas: Arqueologia, Ciência da Computação, Ciências Biológicas, Ciências Econômicas, Design, Educação Física, Enfermagem, Engenharia de Alimentos, Engenharia Ambiental, Engenharia Civil, Engenharia da Computação, Engenharia Elétrica, Fisioterapia, Jornalismo, Publicidade e Propaganda e Zootecnia. O Guia do Estudante apontou a PUC Goiás como a melhor universidade particular do Centro-Oeste e a 10ª melhor universidade particular do Brasil
