- The police procedural is a sub-genre of the mystery story which attempts to convincingly depict the activities of a police force as they investigate crimes. While traditional detective novels usually concentrate on a single crime, police procedurals frequently depict investigations into several unrelated crimes in a single story. While traditional mysteries usually adhere to the convention of having the criminal's identity concealed until the climax, in police procedurals, the perpetrator's identity is often known to the audience from the outset. Police procedurals depict a number of police-related topics such as forensics, autopsies, the gathering of evidence, the use of search warrants and interrogation. Lawrence Treat's 1945 novel V as in Victim is often cited as the first police procedural. The genre moved to radio and then television with Dragnet in the late 1940s and early 1950s. In the 1980s, Hill Street Blues pioneered the depiction of the conflicts between the work and private lives of officers. In 1990s and 2000s, the Law & Order series depict the two 'halves' of a criminal proceeding in the criminal justice system: the investigation of the crime by the police detectives and the subsequent prosecution of the criminals by the district attorney's office. Real-life police officers have raised the issue that such dramas fail to focus on the paperwork that many in law enforcement must deal with.
- Con la locuzione police procedural (dall'inglese procedura di polizia) viene indicato un particolare filone del poliziesco, nato in letteratura attorno agli anni quaranta del Novecento e ben presto sviluppatosi al cinema e in seguito in televisione, grazie a note serie televisive. Le caratteristiche peculiari che lo distinguono da altri sottogeneri e filoni del giallo sono: la presenza, come protagonista, non di un solo investigatore, ma di una vera e propria squadra di agenti che indaga e risolve i casi in modo corale. L'attenzione deve essere rivolta al gruppo di investigatori e non ci deve essere un solo ed unico protagonista la frequente raffigurazione di indagini su più crimini in una singola storia, anche non collegati fra loro. mentre i gialli classici adottano la convenzione di far coincidere il climax con la rivelazione del nome del colpevole, nei police procedural l'identità del cattivo è spesso nota al lettore sin dall'inizio. negli ultimi anni i police procedural rappresentano un certo numero di argomenti strettamente correlati con le indagini delle autorità, come la medicina legale, le autopsie, la raccolta di prove, gli interrogatori, ecc. Il romanzo del 1945 V as in Victim di Lawrence Treat è considerato il primo police procedural della letteratura poliziesca, mentre quello che ha dato inizio alla larga diffusione del genere è Last Seen Wearing (in italiano È scomparsa una ragazza), di Hillary Waugh, pubblicato nel 1952.

- Politiroman er betegnelsen på en undergenre innenfor kriminallitteraturen. I vid forstand er en politiroman en kriminalfortelling der etterforskningen av en forbrytelse foretas av representanter for politiet. I den «klassiske» politiromanen er skildringen av politiets arbeid noenlunde realistisk. Heller enn en enkelt hovedperson, fokuserer en «klassisk» politiroman på et kollektiv av etterforskere. Politifolk som hovedpersoner i kriminalfortellinger har forekommet gjennom hele kriminalgenrens historie, men til tross for at Georges Simenons suksess med Maigret-fortellingene fra begynnelsen av 1930-tallet inspirerte til flere kopier (blant annet i Norge), ble ikke politiromanen etablert som egen undergenre før etter annen verdenskrig. En pionér innen politiroman-genren var amerikaneren Hillary Waugh. Mer innflytelsesrik er Waughs landsmann Ed McBain (Ewan Hunter), og hans langlivede serie om 87. politidistrikt i en fiktiv amerikansk storby. McBain var mer påvirket av radio- og TV-serier, som Dragnet, enn av den trykte litteraturen. Med det svenske forfatterparet Maj Sjöwall og Per Wahlöö slo genren på 1960-tallet ut i full blomst i Norden. Sjöwall & Wahlöö var inspirert av McBain, men også (i de tidlige bøkene) av Simenon. Norges første politiromanforfattere var Tor Edvin Dahl (under pseudonymet David Torjussen; mest påvirket av Waugh) tett fulgt av Gunnar Staalesen (med fortellingene om Dumbo & Maskefjes, inspirert av amerikaneren Chester Himes) – riktignok med en slags forløpere i 1930- og 40-tallets fortellinger om trauste politibetjenter. Fra begynnelsen av 1990-tallet har varianter av politiromanen dominert norsk og internasjonal krim. Kjell Ola Dahl innledet den norske trenden i 1993 med Dødens investeringer, men ble raskt fulgt av Anne Holt, Karin Fossum og Unni Lindell. Jo Nesbø, Jørgen Gunnerud. Bjørn Bottolvs og Jørn Lier Horst må også regnes til de viktige, norske bidragsyterne til genren. Anne Holt, Bjørn Bottolvs og Jørn Lier Horst har alle yrkesbakgrunn fra norsk politi. Dagens politiromaner vil ofte ha en enkelt helt eller heltinne, fremfor politikollektivet. Tidlige eksempler på slike politihelter finnes hos P.D. James, Ruth Rendell og Colin Dexter – i tillegg til pioneren Simenon. Det fremste eksemplet idag er trolig skotske Ian Rankin, og hans bøker om John Rebus. Blant forfatterne som fortsatt holder fast på politikollektivet, kan nevnes svensken Håkan Nesser, som i likhet med McBain henlegger sine fortellinger til en fiktiv by.
