Polari (or alternatively Parlare, Parlary, Palare, Palarie, Palari; from Italian parlare, "to talk") is a form of cant slang used in Britain by actors, circus and fairground showmen, criminals, prostitutes, and by the gay subculture. It was popularised in the 1960s by camp characters Julian and Sandy in the popular BBC radio show Round the Horne. There is some debate about its origins, but it can be traced back to at least the 19th century, and possibly the 16th century.

Von Homosexuellen wurde die Sprache verwendet um unerkannt gegenüber Außenstehenden kommunizieren zu können. Einige Begriffe haben Eingang in den Mainstream-Slang gefunden. Als 1967 das Totalverbot für Homosexualität fiel, nahm die Verwendung ab. Heute ist sie vom Aussterben bedroht. Zum Beispiel „Schau dir den tollen schwulen Mann mit seinem hübschen Gesicht und seiner fantastischen Frisur an!“ würde im Eingeweihten verständlichen Polari ungefähr so klingen: „Vada that bona omi-paloni with his dolly eek and fantabulosa riah!“
