Pine Islands or Pityuses is the name given collectively to the Balearic Islands of Eivissa and Formentera, in the Mediterranean Sea. The islands are situated approximately 100 km southwest of the island of Majorca, and approximately 80 km east of the Cap de la Nau in the Iberian Peninsula. In antiquity they were known as the Pityussa islands, listed in Claudius Ptolemy's Geography, under the names Ophiusis and Ebyssus, which had a town of the same name.

The islands were used by Cilician pirates as a base. The Roman general Annius drove them out with a large fleet and with them the Roman renegade general Quintus Sertorius, who was seeking refuge there. The Pine Islands are sometimes grouped together as part of the Balearic Islands, or else considered separate with the Balearics proper being Majorca and Minorca. - Die Pityusen sind eine Inselgruppe der Balearen, bestehend aus Ibiza, Formentera sowie zahlreichen kleineren und unbewohnten Felseninseln. Der Name Pityusen kommt vom griech. Nissoi pityussai. Die Griechen nannten die Inseln so wegen ihrer damals reichen Pinienwälder, die jedoch auf den gesamten Balearen heimisch waren. Die rund 150 Inseln der Balearischen Inselgruppe entstanden gemeinsam vor rund 100 Millionen Jahren während der so genannten alpidischen Gebirgsbildung, die auch für viele andere mächtige Faltengebirge in Europa wie die Alpen oder das andalusische Faltengebirge verantwortlich ist. Letzteres bildete zusammen mit den heutigen Balearischen Inseln ein Gebirgsmassiv, das Jahrmillionen später durch einen tiefen Meeresgraben in das spanische Festland und die Inselgruppe getrennt wurde. Die Inseln der Pityusen bilden einen Teil der Autonomen Gemeinschaft Illes Balears (Balearische Inseln), die alle Balearen administrativ vereint. Dauerhaft bewohnt sind nur die Inseln Ibiza und Formentera. Wie auf allen Balearischen Inseln wird auch dort als Sprache der Einheimischen Katalanisch gesprochen. El sufix -oussa és indicatiu dels noms imposats pels grecs a les illes i als territoris que fitaven les rutes mediterrànies des de l'Adriàtic i el sud d'Itàlia fins a l'estret de Gibraltar, i la fixació d'aquesta toponímia cal datar-la als voltants del segles VII-VI a.C. Així Meloussa s'ha atribuït a Menorca per quant melon, en grec, significa bestiar i des de sempre aquesta illa ha gaudit de la reputació de ser una terra ramadera, Cromioussa a Mallorca per raons incertes (presumiblement "illa de les cebes"), i Ophioussa a Formentera per l'abundància d'ofidis (serps), i Pitioussa a Eivissa perquè, segons l'autor clàssic Diodor, hi abundaven els pins. El primer poblament de les Pitiüses és pretalaiòtic, però misteriosament, no té continuïtat en el temps amb l'època talaiòtica, i posteriorment al 1300 aC les illes estan despoblades. Els fenicis van ser els primer en repoblar-les, a la segona meitat dels segle VII aC, i van anomenar a la colònia que van fundar a Eivissa colònia ebussitana (prenent el nom d'un dels dos ports que van fundar, Ebusus) i a les Gimnèsies, Illes Balears. Més tard, l'Administració provincial romana va denominar insulae Pityusae el conjunt d'aquestes dues illes, i Ophiusa o Colubria quan es referien només a Formentera. En l'actualitat formen part de les illes Balears, topònim que ha acabat agafant tot el protagonisme. Fins el 2007 compartien el Consell Insular d'Eivissa i Formentera.
