Piled Higher and Deeper (also known as PhD Comics) is a newspaper and web comic strip written and drawn by Jorge Cham that follows the lives of several grad students. First published in the fall of 1997 when Cham was a grad student himself at Stanford University, the strip deals with issues of life in graduate school, including the difficulties of scientific research, the perils of procrastination, the complex student–supervisor relationship and the endless search for free food.

Die Abkürzung PhD steht hier für „Piled Higher and Deeper“ und spielt gleichzeitig auf den Ph.D. -Titel an, der im anglo-amerikanischen Bildungssystem dem deutschen „Doktor der Wissenschaften“ entspricht. Hauptfiguren sind einige Studenten im fortgeschrittenen Semester, die bereits in den Forschungsbetrieb eingegliedert sind. Die Serie handelt hauptsächlich vom Alltag der Studenten als hilflose Spielbälle allmächtiger, zynischer Professoren. Ein ständiges Motiv ist jedoch auch die Motivationslosigkeit der Charaktere, die Tag um Tag mit Internet-Surfen, E-Mailen, Uniaktivitäten und ähnlichem vertrödeln und sich letztlich mit ihrem ineffektiven und frustrierenden akademischen Biotop nicht nur abgefunden haben, sondern sich sogar darin wohl fühlen (auch wenn sie das nie zugeben würden). Der Autor Jorge Cham hat seinen PhD-Titel im Fach „Mechanical Engineering“ an der Stanford-Universität erworben. Diese wird in den Comics selten explizit erwähnt, jedoch sind im Hintergrund oft charakteristische Gebäudeteile des Stanford-Campus zu sehen, was die berühmte Hochschule im US-Bundesstaat Kalifornien als Schauplatz der Serie impliziert.
