Grant, Jr. (1870), Richard and Francis Cleveland; "grandfather of football" Amos Alonzo Stagg (1880); and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Booth Tarkington (1889). Exeter students and alumni call themselves "Exonians”. Exeter is noted for its Harkness education, a system based on a conference format of teacher and student interaction, similar to the Socratic method of learning through asking questions and creating discussions. The school's traditional rival is Phillips Academy (Andover), and the annual Exeter-Andover Football game has been played since 1878.
