- Philippe Rousselot is a French director of photography, born on 4 September 1945 in Briey, Meurthe-et-Moselle, France. After having studied cinema at l'Ecole Louis Lumière, he graduated in 1966 with, among others, François About, Eduardo Serra, Noël Very, and Jean-François Robin (to whom he will entrust, thirty years later, the photography of The Serpent's Kiss). He began his life's work as an assistant to Nestor Almendros, then quickly emerged as chief operator, leading to a dazzling career. He collaborated, in particular, with Jean-Jacques Beineix, Alain Cavalier, Jean-Jacques Annaud, Robert Redford, Stephen Frears, Patrice Chéreau, Bertrand Blier, and Tim Burton on Planet of the Apes, Big Fish, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. He won the 1992 Academy Award for Best Cinematography for his work on A River Runs Through It and earned three César Awards, in 1982 for Diva, in 1987 for Thérèse and in 1995 for Queen Margot. With Beineix and Diva, he worked successfully to make photographic aesthetics a central element of the filming process, developing a photographic light "effect" and creating a timeless, almost unreal atmosphere, which would become his trademark as in the films of Bertrand Blier. He tried to achieve this effect in 1997 with The Serpent's Kiss.

Philippe Rousselot a obtenu l'Oscar de la meilleure photographie en 1992 pour Et au milieu coule une rivière ainsi que trois César : en 1982 pour Diva, en 1987 pour Thérèse et en 1995 pour La Reine Margot. Avec Diva de Beinex, il participe grandement à l'affirmation de l'esthétique photographique comme élément central du processus filmique et consacre une lumière "à effet", créant une atmosphère onirique, atemporelle, presque irréelle qui sera sa marque de fabrique notamment dans les films de Bertrand Blier. Il est passé à la réalisation en 1997 avec "Le Baiser du Serpent".

A nyolcvanas években több alkalommal dolgozott John Boorman brit rendezővel, 1989-ben pedig első kollaborációjára került sor Neil Jordannel, akivel azóta további három ízben működött együtt. 1992-ben Oscar-díjat nyert a Robert Redford által rendezett Folyó szeli ketté című filmen végzett munkájáért. Korábban kétszer jelölték: az 1987-es Remény és dicsőség és az 1990-es Henry és June képeivel hívta fel magára az Akadémia figyelmét. 2007-ben újfent együtt forgatott Redforddal és Jordannel is. 1995-ben tagja volt a cannes-i filmfesztivál zsűrijének.
