Philip of Hesse-Philippsthal was the son of William VI, Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel (or Hesse-Cassel) and Hedwig Sophie von Brandenburg. He was the first landgrave of Hesse-Philippsthal from 1663 to 1721 and the founder of the fifth branch of the house of Hesse.

Filips huwt in 1680 met Catharina Amalia van Solms-Laubach (1654-1721), dochter van graaf Karel Otto van Solms-Laubach, en werd vader van: Karel (1682-1770) Filips (1686-1717) Willem van Hessen-Philippsthal-Barchfeld (1692-1761) Sophia (1695-1728), in 1723 gehuwd met Peter August van Sleeswijk-Holstein-Sonderburg-Beck (1695-1775). Na zijn dood werd Hessen-Philippsthal nog eens opgesplitst tussen Hessen-Philippsthal en Hessen-Philippsthal-Barchfeld.
