He is best remembered for reaching the men's singles final at the Australian Open in 1974, where he lost to Jimmy Connors 7–6, 6–4, 4–6, 6–3. Dent was also a men's doubles champion at the Australian Open in 1975, and a mixed doubles champion at the US Open in 1976. Dent also reached five further Grand Slam men's doubles finals, finishing runner-up at the Australian Open in 1970, 1973 and 1977, and at the French Open in 1975 and 1979. He was a member of the Australian teams which won the Davis Cup in 1977 and the World Team Cup in 1979. Prior to turning professional, Dent won the boy's singles titles at both the Australian Open and the French Open in 1968. During his professional career, Dent won two top-level singles titles and 25 doubles titles. His career-high singles ranking was World No. 19 (in 1978). He retired from the professional tour in 1983. Since retiring as a player, Dent has settled in Orange County, California, in the United States. His son Taylor Dent became a professional tennis player and competed for the U.S. After a 3 year layoff to recover from injuries Taylor Dent and recently returned to the tour. Dent defeated Björn Borg in the third round of the 1974 Australian Open, which was the only time that Borg played the tournament.
