- Pierre de Montereau or Pierre de Montreuil was a French architect. He is widely recognized as one of the most important proponents of Gothic architecture, though little is known of his life and sources vary as to which buildings are by him. After some time training in Champagne, he worked on the Basilique Saint-Denis until around 1231. His talent was noticed and he was summoned around 1239 by the monks of the Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés to Paris to build them a new refectory. Between 1246 and 1248 he built his masterpiece, the Sainte-Chapelle, for Louis IX. Situated on the Île de la Cité, it represents a model of Gothic art, filled with openings and windows and reducing the walls to a minimum. He also built a Sainte-Chapelle at Château de Saint-Germain-en-Laye, the initial home of the relics meant for the Paris Sainte-Chapelle. Around 1250, he built the single-nave Sainte-Chapelle de Notre-Dame in the Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. Also attributed to him, around 1260, is the modification of the transept arms of Notre Dame de Paris, as well as the chapel at château de Vincennes and the refectory of the abbey of Saint-Martin-des-Champs in Paris (today the library of the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers). He was buried with his wife in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, in the chapel he had built. His epitaph is engraved on the tomb and gives his title as docteur ès pierre (doctor in stone). This chapel and the refectory of Saint-Germain-des-Prés were demolished in 1794.

Podílel se především na stavbě Sugerovy baziliky, jejíž příčné lodi během let 1230 -1268 vtiskl neopakovatelné kouzlo světla. Je považován za architekta slavné Sainte Chapelle, kde pracoval pro krále Ludvíka IX. v letech 1246–1248. I v královské kapli se snažil o maximální využití světla a minimalizoval zdi ve prospěch barevných vitráží, které učinily z horní kaple jeden ze skvostů gotického stavitelství. Podílel se na přestavbě kláštera Saint-Germain-des-Prés, je autorem mariánské kaple, jejíž portál je dochován v Národním muzeu středověku. Pracoval na zámecké kapli ve Vincennes a refektáři kláštera Saint-Martin-des-Champs. Po smrti stavitele Jehana de Chelles se na pouhý rok stal stavbyvedoucím pařížské katedrály Notre-Dame, vytvořil tympanon nad Červeným portálem severní strany katedrály a dokončil jižní rozetové okno.

Sa vie est assez mal connue et les sources divergent quant à ses œuvres, mais il est généralement admis qu'il est l'un des plus grands architectes de la période gothique. Après une période de formation en Champagne, il aurait travaillé dans la basilique de Saint-Denis aux alentours de 1231. Remarqué pour son talent, il est appelé vers 1239 par l'abbaye de Saint-Germain-des-Prés à Paris pour y réaliser un nouveau réfectoire. Entre 1246 et 1248, il bâtit son chef-d'œuvre, la Sainte-Chapelle, sur la demande de Louis IX. Située sur l'Île de la Cité, elle représente un modèle de l'art gothique, privilégiant les ouvertures et les vitraux, et réduisant les murs à un minimum. Vers 1250, il construit la Sainte-Chapelle de Notre-Dame dans l'abbaye de Saint-Germain-des-Prés, une grande chapelle à une nef. On lui attribue également vers 1260 la modification des bras du transept de Notre-Dame de Paris, mais aussi la chapelle du château de Vincennes, et le réfectoire de le Prieuré Saint-Martin-des-Champs à Paris (aujourd'hui bibliothèque du Conservatoire national des arts et métiers) Sa tombe ainsi que celle de son épouse furent placées à Saint-Germain-des-Prés, dans la chapelle qu'il avait bâtie. Son épitaphe, gravée sur sa tombe, indiquait son titre de docteur ès pierre. Cette chapelle ainsi que le réfectoire de Saint-Germain-des-Prés furent détruits en 1794.
