Mainly used as a relief pitcher, Ladd started just one game out of 205 total games pitched. In 1982, Ladd was thrown into the fire following an injury to Rollie Fingers, making the Milwaukee Brewers' postseason roster as their closer despite limited major league experience. He pitched well in three appearances during the ALCS, appearing three times (3.1 innings) without giving up a baserunner while notching 5 strikeouts, picking up a pair of saves in the Brewers' win over the California Angels. However, after allowing the go-ahead run to score in relief of Bob McClure in game 2 of the World Series, he did not appear again in a series that went seven games in a loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. Ladd's best season came the following year, 1983. Ladd served as the Brewers' closer that season, saving 25 games in 44 appearances with a 2.55 ERA. He pitched two more seasons for the Brewers before being released. After one more season with the Seattle Mariners in 1986, Ladd's major league career was over.
