- Penn State Wilkes-Barre is a commonwealth campus of the Pennsylvania State University. It is located in Back Mountain, Pennsylvania. The Wilkes-Barre Campus can trace its history to 1915, when two top engineers in the coal industry who were Penn State released a study on the growing need for additional engineers in the region. The next year, faculty from University Park began teaching night classes in the field at an area high school. Until the late 1940s, the school only offered evening courses in mechanical subjects. However, during this era, they began offering standard classes, and in 1953, they made available their first two full associate degrees. In the mid-1960s, the school moved from its location in a hodgepodge of Downtown Wilkes-Barre buildings to its current suburban campus. The Penn State Wilkes-Barre campus offers Bachelor's Degrees in the following areas: Administration of Justice, Business, Electrical Engineering Technology, English, Information Science, Letters Arts and Sciences, Organizational Leadership (and adult education curriculum), and Surveying engineering. The school's four-year surveying program remains as the only one in the nation.
