- Passive–aggressive behavior is passive, sometimes obstructionist resistance to following through with expectations in interpersonal or occupational situations. It can manifest itself as learned helplessness, procrastination, stubbornness, resentment, sullenness, or deliberate/repeated failure to accomplish requested tasks for which one is (often explicitly) responsible. It is a defense mechanism, and (more often than not) only partly conscious. For example, a worker, when asked to organize a meeting, might seemingly happily agree to do so, but will then take so long on each task in the process - offering excuses such as calls not being returned, or that the computer is too slow, or that things are not ready when the meeting is due to start - that a colleague is forced to hurriedly complete the task, lest the meeting be postponed.

De lijder aan deze stoornis wordt gekenmerkt door een agressief denkpatroon jegens de mensen die gezag over hem uitoefenen. De passief-agressieve persoonlijkheid was gerubriceerd als een As II-persoonlijkheidsstoornis in de DSM-III, maar het is verplaatst in DSM-IV naar Appendix B (toekomstige ontwikkelingen), om reden dat er nog niet voldoende overeenstemming bestond en verder onderzoek nodig werd geacht. Het is een soort hangend stadium van puberaal gedrag, waardoor de persoon in kwestie zich nog altijd passief-agressief verzet tegen bevelen.

- A característica essencial é um padrão invasivo de atitudes negativistas e resistência passiva a exigências de desempenho adequado em situações sociais e ocupacionais, que começa no início da idade adulta e ocorre em uma variedade de contextos. Esses indivíduos habitualmente ressentem, opõem-se e resistem a exigências de que funcionem em um nível esperado pelos outros. A resistência é expressa por procrastinação, esquecimento, teimosia e ineficiência intencional, especialmente em resposta a tarefas designadas por figuras de autoridade. Esses indivíduos sentem-se trapaceados, desconsiderados e incompreendidos e são cronicamente queixosos. Eles podem ser mal-humorados, irritáveis, impacientes, propensos a discussões, cínicos, céticos e "do contra".
