Gründer war der impressionistische Maler William Merritt Chase. 1898 wurde die Schule in New York School of Art umbenannt. 1904 kam Frank Alvah Parsons an die Schule und entwickelte dort 1907 die bis dahin in den Vereinigten Staaten ersten Kursangebote für Innenarchitektur, Grafikdesign und Werbung. Um dem erweiterten Schulangebot Rechnung zu tragen, hieß die Schule ab 1909 New York School of Fine and Applied Art. Parson war von 1911 bis zu seinem Tode im Jahr 1930 Direktor der Schule. Ihm zu Ehren taufte der spätere Direktor William Odom die Schule 1939 in Parsons School of Design um. Die heutige Bezeichnung Parsons The New School for Design trägt die Schule seit der Umbenennung der Mutterinstitution in The New School. Die Parsons ist Mitglied in der Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design (AICAD). Das Hauptcampus befindet sich im Greenwich Village, der bekannte Fachbereich „Mode“ im Kern des Garment Districts.
