Gregory "Pappy" Boyington (December 4, 1912 - January 11, 1988) was a United States Marine Corps officer who was an American fighter ace during World War II. For his heroic actions, he was awarded both the Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross. Boyington flew initially with the American Volunteer Group ("The Flying Tigers") in the Republic of China Air Force during the Second Sino-Japanese War. He later commanded the famous U.S. Marine Corps squadron, VMF-214 during World War II.

Greg "Pappy" Boyington est né en 1912. Il est d'origine Sioux. En 1936 il rejoint le corps des Marines et devient pilote, mais ses frasques l’obligent à démissionner. Il s’engage alors aux côtés du général Chennault et de ses Tigres Volants en Chine, où il est crédité de 6 victoires. Après l'attaque sur Pearl Harbor, il rejoint à nouveau les Marines mais il est toujours indiscipliné, buveur et amateur de femmes. Il rassemble autour de lui des fortes têtes dans l’escadrille VMF 214, basée sur l'île de Vella Lavella, dans le Pacifique-sud, et qui choisit le surnom de « Black sheep » (les brebis galeuses). Il y est surnommé "Pappy" parce qu'il a, à l'époque, 30 ans soit 10 de plus que la moyenne de ses pilotes. Son escadrille revendique 96 victoires aériennes dont 28 sont attribuées à "Pappy". En janvier 1944 Greg Boyington est abattu et déclaré mort. On lui décerne alors à titre posthume, la Medal of Honor, la plus haute distinction américaine. En fait, il avait été capturé par les Japonais et ne sera libéré que 20 mois plus tard. Élevé au rang de colonel et rendu à la vie civile, il écrit ses mémoires dans le livre Baa baa blacksheep dont la série Les Têtes brûlées est inspirée. Il meurt en janvier 1988 d'un cancer, à Fresno, en Californie, et eut le droit à des obsèques militaires au cimetière national d'Arlington où il est enterré non loin du boxeur Joe Louis. Il est le père de trois enfants, issus d'un premier mariage, qu'il a peu vus, dont une fille qui s'est suicidée et un fils qui a intégré l'académie de l'US Air Force en 1959. Anecdote : dans la matinée du 18 octobre 1943, avec la VMF-221, au-dessus de Kahili, Boyington se branche sur une station de radio capté par les Japonais, impatient d'en découdre. Voici son message : « Venez donc vous battre, bande de bâtards jaunes ! » « Major Boyington, quelle est votre position, s'il vous plaît ? » « Juste au-dessus de vos culs de jaunes, montez donc vous battre.  » « Pourquoi ne descendez vous pas, Major ? » Cette provocation eu l'effet désiré puisque dans les minutes qui suivirent, 15 appareils décollèrent. Il obtiendra une victoire supplémentaire ce jour là.
