- The papal cross or ferula is an emblem of the papal office. As a material cross, it was carried before the Roman pontiff in processions or was used by him as his pastoral staff. In the past, this design of the cross was often used in ecclesiastical heraldry, as a distinctive mark of his office. It has three horizontal bars near the top, in diminishing order of length as the top is approached. It is thus analogous to the two-barred cross used in heraldry to indicate an archbishop, and seems to have been used precisely to indicate an ecclesiastical rank still higher than that of archbishop. Symbolism connected with the papal powers have been attached to the three crossbars, similar to the symbolism attached, with greater historical foundation, to the three bands on the papal tiara. The crossbars have also been said to represent the three crosses on Calvary. The pastoral staff carried by the popes since Pope Paul VI is a contemporary single-barred crucifix, designed by the Italian artist Lello Scorzelli and carried in the same manner as a crozier. However, the cross bar is bent much like the paterissa carried by an Eastern Christian bishop. On 16 March 2008, at the Palm Sunday celebrations in St Peter's Square, Pope Benedict XVI used the Papal Cross that had been previously used by Popes Pius IX and Pius XII. This cross has now been adopted as the usual ferula.

Ook Paus Benedictus XVI gebruikte deze kruisstaf enige tijd maar met Pasen 2008 gebruikte hij een vergulde staf met een rijkversierd klassiek Latijns kruis erop, voorzien van enkele medaillons, die al eerder enkele keren door Paus Pius XII (1939-1958) en Paus Johannes XXIII (1958-1963) gebruikt werd.

O papa nunca usou o báculo pelo fato de sua voluta significar limitação de poder, o que, obviamente, não se aplica ao Soberano Pontífice. A Férula é símbolo de governo e correção. Primitivamente, os papas recebiam na sua cerimônia de posse solene, costume que subsistiu até o século XVI. Depois, passaram a usá-la sem ato de recepção. O Papa Bento XVI não retomou a férula de João XXIII, como afirmam alguns progressistas; mas, sim a de Pio IX. Em algumas cerimônias, como na abertura da Porta Santa, os papas fazem uso de uma espécie de cruz processional com três braços, a chamada Cruz Papal, que alguns autores chamam de Hierofante.

- Ett påvekors är ett kors med tre olika långa tvärbalkar på huvudbalkens övre del, på lika avstånd från varandra. Den kortaste tvärbalken är överst och den längsta underst. Namnet kommer från att korset har en balk mer än patriarkalkorset, som bars av biskopar. Korset har alltså ingenting med någon påve att göra egentligen.
- 教宗十字（拉丁語：ferula）是罗马教宗的标志。作为实体的十字，它在游行时被举在教宗前面，或者被教宗用作其牧杖(pastoral staff，或称crosier)。
