- Pandora is an automated music recommendation and Internet radio service created by the Music Genome Project. Users enter a song or artist that they enjoy, and the service responds by playing selections that are musically similar. Users provide feedback on approval or disapproval of individual songs, which Pandora takes into account for future selections. While listening, users are offered the ability to buy the songs or albums at Amazon MP3, Amazon. com (for CDs), or the iTunes Store. Over 400 different musical attributes are considered when selecting the next song. These 400 attributes are combined into larger groups called focus traits. There are 2,000 focus traits. Examples of these are rhythm syncopation, key tonality, vocal harmonies and displayed instrumental proficiency. The Pandora media player is based on OpenLaszlo. Pandora can also be accessed through many stand-alone players such as Frontier Silicon-based connected audio systems, Slim Devices and Sonos product(s). On July 11, 2008, Pandora launched a mobile version of their software for the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch through the iTunes App Store; as of December 2008, two million iPhone users had downloaded and installed the application. Pandora is also available for Android phones (such as the T-Mobile G1), BlackBerry platforms, WebOS (used on the Palm Pre), and Windows Mobile devices. MSN Radio used Pandora up until June 18, 2008, which was launched two years before. The service has two subscription plans: a free subscription supported by advertisements, and a fee-based subscription without ads. There are also advertisements in "Pandora Mobile" for mobile phones and the "Pandora in The Home" computer appliance. In 2007, the service introduced "Pandora Classical", incorporating classical music from the baroque period to the contemporary period into its Music Genome Project.

Por ello denominaron el proyecto como The Music Genome Project, (algo así como el Proyecto del Genoma Musical). Su propósito es capturar la esencia de la música en su nivel más fundamental. Semejante al proyecto del genoma humano, su idea es clasificar de alguna forma la música analizando los "genes" de cada canción: melodía, armonía, ritmo, instrumentación, orquestación, arreglo, letra y otros. Con esta clasificación han podido dar un siguiente nivel el cual es ofrecer estaciones de radio personalizadas a través de la Internet; el usuario sugiere el nombre de una canción y la página genera una estación de radio con una lista de música "genómicamente" parecida a la que se solicitó en la consulta (por razones legales la canción solicitada no se toca inmediatamente). El usuario tiene la posibilidad de marcar las canciones como de su agrado o desagrado e ir personalizando sus estaciones. También puede proponer alguna nueva canción, e inclusive mandar música de la que el usuario sea autor. Ahora sólo disponible para usuarios de U.S. Existe una version que funciona en España llamada global pandora.

Voix, instruments, effets, rythmes, pas moins de 400 aspects musicaux sont analysés pour chaque nouvelle musique et le répertoire de Pandora intègre plus de 10 000 artistes. Le service propose deux types d'inscriptions : La première est gratuite mais accompagnée de publicités tandis que la suivante est payante mais sans ce désagrément.

Door licentiebeperkingen werd de dienst sinds mei 2007 uitsluitend nog beschikbaar voor mensen binnen de Verenigde Staten. In andere landen werd het niet langer mogelijk om Pandora te beluisteren. Op basis van het IP-adres van de bezoeker werd de toegang tot de dienst geweigerd.
