P'urhépecha (also Tarascan, Tarasco, Phorhé, Purepecha) is a language isolate or small language family spoken by more than 100,000 P'urhépecha people in the highlands of the Mexican state of Michoacán. Even though it is spoken within the boundaries of Mesoamerica P'urhépecha does not share many of the traits defining the Mesoamerican Linguistic Area, probably due to a long adherence to an isolationist policy.

P'urhépecha was the main language of the pre-Columbian Tarascan state and became widespread in north western Mexico during the height of the Tarascan state.

Según algunos especialistas, las variaciones son motivo de orgullo para los P'urhépecha puesto que indican su procedencia y mantienen las diferencias dialectales aún si se mudan a otro pueblo de la misma región. De acuerdo con cifras del XII Censo General de Población y Vivienda de 2000 existen unos 121 409 hablantes de la lengua P'urhépecha asentados en 22 municipios y sólo el 25% es monolingüe. A partir de 1980 ha dado inicio un movimiento de apoyo a través de la Academia de la Lengua P'urhépecha (P'urhe Uandakueri Juramukua) por el cual se ha conseguido el fortalecimiento y difusión de esta lengua. El P'urhépecha es actualmente una lengua literaria debido a la gran difusión que han tenido los Concursos Regionales de Cuento en Lenguas Indígenas coordinados por la Dirección General de Culturas Populares e Indígenas y los estados de Hidalgo, Querétaro, Michoacán y México, los cuales han fortalecido también el carácter literario de las lenguas náhuatl, otomí y mazahua.
