Ouarzazate (called The door of the desert), is a city and capital of Ouarzazate Province in the Souss-Massa-Draâ of southern-central Morocco. As of 2004 it had a population of 56,616. Ouarzazate is located at an altitude of 1,160 m in the middle of a bare plateau, south of the High Atlas Mountains. To the south of the town is the desert. The town is chiefly inhabited by Berbers, who constructed many of the prominent kasbahs and building for which the area is known for.

Ouarzazate is located at an altitude of 1,160 m in the middle of a bare plateau, south of the High Atlas Mountains. To the south of the town is the desert. The town is chiefly inhabited by Berbers, who constructed many of the prominent kasbahs and building for which the area is known for. Ouarzazate is one of the important holiday destinations in Morocco as a nodal point for excursion across the Draa Valley and desert in the area. The fortified village (ksar) of Ait Benhaddou has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The town and surrounding area is also a noted film-making location, with Morocco's biggest studios inviting many international film companies to shoot their films. Films such as Lawrence of Arabia (1962), Star Wars (1977), The Living Daylights (1987), The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), The Mummy (1999), Gladiator (2000) and Martin Scorsese's Kundun (1997) were shot in the Ouarazate area.

Nicht unweit der Stadt liegt der Stausee El-Mansour-Eddahbi, der, wesentlich gespeist durch den dem Hohen Atlas entspringenden Fluss Dadès, seine Wasser in den Drâa entlässt. Der Drâa fließt in einer eindrucksvollen Schlucht Richtung Süden durch das malerische Drâa-Tal in die Sahara. Ebenfalls hat Ouarzazate den Flughafen Ouarzazate und ist über die Straße von Marrakesch her mit dem Bus (4 Std. ) oder großem Taxi (3 1/2 Std. ) zu erreichen. Gegründet wurde Ouarzazate von der französischen Kolonialverwaltung 1928. Sie war eine Garnisonsstadt der Fremdenlegion. Am Stadtrand liegt eine der eindrucksvollsten Kasbahs des Landes, die Kasbah Taouirt. Es handelt sich um eine der besonder großen Wohnburgen, innerhalb deren Stampflehm-Mauern auch heute noch Angehörige des Haouza-Stammes leben. Die Kasbah ist eine auch historisch interessante Anlage, da sie den Palast des El Haouzi, des Stammesfürsten, beherbergte. Etwa ein Drittel des Palastgebäudes ist heute öffentlich zugänglich. Der letzte El Haouzi von politischer Bedeutung, Thami El Haouzi, kollaborierte in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts mit den französischen Kolonialherren und spielte bis zur Unabhängigkeit eine machtvolle Rolle - zeitweise war er Pascha von Marrakesch. Sein Versuch, sich mit dem nach der Befreiung inthronisierten Mohammed V. zu versöhnen, misslang. Thami El Haouzi starb 1955. In Ouarzazate befinden sich mehrere Filmstudios, darunter die Atlas Corporation Studios, die 1983 vom Hotelier Mohamed Belghmi gegründet wurden. Zu den bekanntesten Filmen, die in Ouarzazate gedreht wurden, gehören zahlreiche Bibel- und Monumentalverfilmungen, darunter „Gladiator“, „Die Bibel – Josef“ und „Das Jesus Video“. Eine andere berühmte Kasbah, die ebenfalls als Filmdrehort Bedeutung hat ist Aït Benhaddou, das etwa 30 Kilometer westlich von Ouarzazate liegt.
