  • Ottone Visconti war der Begründer der Macht der Familie Visconti in Mailand und der Lombardei. Er war Kanoniker aus Desio und wurde durch den Einfluss des Kardinals Ubaldini von Papst Urban IV. (regierte 1261-1264) 1262 als Anführer der Ghibellinen zum Erzbischof von Mailand ernannt. Die Familie della Torre, die die Anführer der Guelfen war und zu dieser Zeit die Stadt kontrollierte, widersetzte sich der Ernennung, und erst nach seinem Sieg bei Desio im Jahr 1277 war es Ottone möglich, seine Diözese in Besitz zu nehmen und die Herrschaft der Visconti über die Stadt zu begründen. Er ließ Napoleone della Torre und fünf seiner Verwandten in Eisenkäfige sperren, und richtete seine weiteren Anstrengungen auf die Zukunft seines Neffen Matteo I. Visconti, der nach Ottone Tod dann auch der politische Anführer Mailands wurde.
