Otfried Nippold (May 21, 1864 - July 27, 1938) was a German-Swiss jurist, pacifist and internationalist. He was also an academic and a prolific author. Nippold was born in Wiesbaden, Germany as the son of Professor Friedrich Nippold of the University of Berne and the University of Jena. He attended gymnasium in Burgdorf and in Berne and studied law at the University of Berne, University of Halle, University of Tübingen and at the University of Jena.

  • Otfried Nippold (May 21, 1864 - July 27, 1938) was a German-Swiss jurist, pacifist and internationalist. He was also an academic and a prolific author. Nippold was born in Wiesbaden, Germany as the son of Professor Friedrich Nippold of the University of Berne and the University of Jena. He attended gymnasium in Burgdorf and in Berne and studied law at the University of Berne, University of Halle, University of Tübingen and at the University of Jena. At the Jena, he earned his doctorate in 1886. In 1889, Nippon was invited by the Japanese government as a foreign advisor. He taught at the Law School of the University of Tokyo. On his return to Europe on the conclusion of his three year contract, he worked as a lawyer in Thun and Berne and acquired Swiss citizenship in 1905. The same year, he passed his habilitation in international law at the University of Berne. After a brief stay in Frankfurt he returned to Switzerland after the outbreak of the First World War. Following the war, he became President of the High Court of the Saarland in Saarlouis in 1921. In 1927, he had become a professor of the University of Berne, and returned to Switzerland to assume his seat in 1934. He died in 1938 in Switzerland

Er besuchte die Gymnasien Burgdorf und Bern und studierte an den Universitäten Bern, Halle, Tübingen und Jena Jurisprudenz, an letzterer erwarb er 1886 den Doktorgrad. Er wurde Richter in Sachsen-Weimar. 1889 wurde er für drei Jahre zu einer Lehrtätigkeit an der Rechtsschule des Vereins für deutsche Wissenschaften nach Tokio eingeladen. Anschließend ließ er sich als Rechtsanwalt in Thun und Bern nieder und erwarb 1905 die Schweizer Staatsangehörigkeit. Im gleichen Jahr habilitierte er sich an der Universität Bern im Fach Völkerrecht. Nach einem Intermezzo in Frankfurt am Main kehrte er bei Kriegsausbruch in die Schweiz zurück. 1921 wurde er Präsident des Obersten Gerichtshofs des Saarlandes in Saarlouis. 1934 kehrte er wiederum in die Schweiz zurück. Bereits 1927 wurde er Professor an der Universität Bern.
