Members are given a stainless steel ring called the Engineer's Ring that is worn on the little finger of the working hand. This is similar to the Iron Ring used in Canadian ceremonies. Unlike the iron ring in Canadian ceremonies, the ring does not have the "manually hammered" appearance, and is instead of a more conventional ring design. The first ceremony was held on June 4, 1970 at Cleveland State University's Fenn College of Engineering. Now, almost all states have universities with chapters, called "links", that host the Order of the Engineer. Several engineering organizations also host links such as NSPE, United States Army Corps of Engineers, and ASCE. At Wayne State University, engineering graduates are awarded the ring while putting their hands through a big ring, then their professor puts the little ring on. After the ceremony, the graduates celebrate by playing with the big ring. Early attempts to extend The Ritual of the Calling of an Engineer to the United States were unsuccessful due to complications including copyright issues.

La legge numero 1395 del 1923 affida agli Ordini provinciali la tutela del titolo e dell'esercizio della professione che si attua mediante la tenuta dell'Albo cui ogni professionista deve obbligatoriamente iscriversi se vuole esercitare la professione. Il D.P.R. 5 giugno 2001, n. 328 ha modificato la struttura dell'Albo degli Ingegneri dividendolo in sezioni e settori a seconda della formazione accademica e degli esami di Stato sostenuti dall'iscritto. Il Consiglio Nazionale Ingegneri (C.N.I. ), disciplinato dal DPR 169/2005, è l'organismo che rappresenta istituzionalmente sul piano nazionale gli interessi rilevanti della categoria professionale degli ingegneri. Il Consiglio è un ente di diritto pubblico vigilato dal Ministero della Giustizia, è composto da quindici Consiglieri il cui insediamento è ratificato da decreto del Ministero della Giustizia in base all'esito di regolare elezione da parte di tutti i Consigli provinciali dell'Ordine. Il mandato è quinquennale ed il Consiglio in carica esercita le proprie funzioni fino all'insediamento effettivo del nuovo Consiglio eletto. Per il quinquennio 2006-2011 il presidente del Consiglio è l’ing. Ferdinando Luminoso.
