  • The Ontario College of Art & Design (-kad) is Canada's largest and oldest university for art and design. It is located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on McCaul Street beside the Art Gallery of Ontario. The school combines an experiential, studio-based education with liberal studies, which is recognized with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA), a Bachelor of Design (BDes), an Interdisciplinary Master's in Art Media and Design (MA, MFA or MDes), a Master's in Criticism and Curatorial Practices (MFA), or an Executive Master's of Design in Advertising (EMDes). The school has a student body of approximately 3,500 and close to 400 full-time and part-time faculty members. Courses are offered through the Faculty of Art, Faculty of Design, Faculty of Liberal Studies and alternative programs. OCAD's current president is Sara Diamond, a practicing artist and designer who has served as the Artistic Director of Media and Visual Art and as the Director of Research at the Banff Centre.

Die Universität wurde 1876 als Ontario School of Art gegründet und benannte sich 1931 in Ontario College of Art um. Den heutigen Namen trägt sie seit 1996. Das OCAD hat eine Reihe von berühmten Absolventen wie beispielsweise der Schauspieler und Regisseur Michael Ironside. In den Jahren 1969/70 erfuhr die Hochschule durch Roy Ascott einschneidenden Veränderungen im Studienablauf und den Studieninhalten. Im Jahr 2004 erfuhr das Institut eine Erweiterung durch das Sharp Centre for Design, welches vom Architekten Will Alsop in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Büro Robbie/Young + Wright Architects Inc. gestaltet wurde. Die 42,5 Millionen teure Erweiterung wird von einem weißen Quader auf einer 26 Meter hohen Stelzenkonstruktion geprägt. Der Quader beherbergt auf zwei Stockwerken Ausstellungsräume, Hörsäle und Verwaltungsräume des Designzentrums. Neben den quadratischen Fenstern wecken unterschiedlich große schwarze Quadrate den Eindruck, der Baukörper sei durchlöchert.
