The Catalan language diverged from Old Occitan between the eleventh and fourteenth centuries. It was the first Romance language with a literary corpus, was that used by the troubadours, and had an enormous influence on the literary development of other European languages, especially the Romance varieties and especially of lyric poetry. The only published textbook for English students is William D. Paden's An Introduction to Old Occitan (1998).
