The city and municipality of Oaxaca de Juárez, or simply Oaxaca, is the capital and largest city of the Mexican state of the same name. It is located in the Central Valleys region of the state, in the foothills of the Sierra Madre at the base of the Cerro del Fortín extending to the banks of the Atoyac River.

  • Oaxaca is the name of both a state in Mexico and that state's capital city. This article is about the city/municipality. For the state, see Oaxaca. The city and municipality of Oaxaca de Juárez, or simply Oaxaca, is the capital and largest city of the Mexican state of the same name. It is located in the Central Valleys region of the state, in the foothills of the Sierra Madre at the base of the Cerro del Fortín extending to the banks of the Atoyac River. This city relies heavily on tourism, which is based on it large quantity of colonial-era structures as well as the native Zapotec and Mixtec cultures and archeological sites. It, along with the archeological site of Monte Alban were named a World Heritage Site in 1987. It is also the home of the month-long cultural festival called the “Guelaguetza,” which features Oaxacan dance, music and an beauty pageant for indigenous women. It is nicknamed "la Verde Antequera" (the green Antequera) due to its prior name (Nueva Antequera) and the variety of structures built from a native green stone. The name Oaxaca is derived from the Nahuatl name for the place, Huaxyacac, which was Hispanicized to Guajaca, later spelled Oaxaca. “de Juárz” was added in honor of Benito Juárez, who was a native of this state. The coat of arms for the municipality bears the image of the decapitated Donaji, who was an indigenous princess in the years immediately after the Conquest.

En 1872, a la muerte del "Benemérito de las Américas" Benito Juárez, recibió el nombre que actualmente ostenta, "Oaxaca de Juárez".

Le 25 novembre 1521 Francisco de Orozco y Tovar concentra ses troupes à Huaxycacac ou les mexicas qui avaient colonisé la région et prélevaient des taxes sur les habitants y avaient construit en 1486 un important poste militaire. Le 14 septembre 1522 une cédule royale autorisa l'établissement d'une ville sur ce lieu, elle reçut le nom d'Antequera d'Oaxaca. Les plans de celle-ci furent tracés par Alonso Garcia Bravo, qui avait précédemment travaillé à ceux de la ville de México. La ville coloniale a été fondée en 1532 par des colons espagnols ayant suivi les conquistadors de Hernán Cortés. Elle fut par la suite baptisée en hommage au président Benito Juárez, (qui est né dans les environs). Dans la région se trouvent d’importants sites archéologiques zapotèques: Monte Alban et Mitla entre autres. Enfin, un musée y est consacré au peintre Rufino Tamayo qui regroupe certaines de ses œuvres ainsi que des objets précolombiens. En 1979 y fut fondée la Conférence des partis politiques d'Amérique latine COPPPAL. En 2006, un important mouvement social secoue la ville.
