El nom "Niassalàndia" fa referència al llac Niassa, situat al nordest de la zona. Actualment Niassalàndia es coneix amb el nom de "Malawi" i el llac Niassa amb el nom de "llac Malawi". La bandera fou el pavelló blau britànic, del 1907 al 1914 amb l'emblema de l'antiga Àfrica Central; del 1914 a 1964 amb l'escut concedit al territori el 11 de maig de 1914. Del 1953 al 1963 la bandera de la federació era issada al costat de la territorial. Fins el 28 d'abril de 1919 l'escut estava dins d'un disc blanc però en aquesta data es va dictar una instrucció per suprimir-lo. El governador va utilitzar la "Union Jack" amb l'emblema de l'Àfrica Central (1907-1914) dins de garlanda, i la mateixa bandera amb l'escut concedit al territori el 11 de maig de 1914 també dins de garlanda.

Een veel groter gebied in Centraal-Oost-Afrika, te weten Zuid-Rhodesië en Noord-Rhodesië, kwam in 1891 onder Brits koloniaal bestuur als het Brits Centraal-Afrikaans Protectoraat (British Central Africa Protectorate). In 1907 werd een deel daarvan het protectoraat Nyasaland. In 1912 richtten een aantal voormannen de North Nyasa Native Association (NNNA) op. Deze ijverde binnen de bestaande structuren voor betere leefomstandigheden voor de arbeiders op de plantages en in de mijnen. In 1915 kwam de evangelist John Chilembwe in opstand tegen het Britse gezag. De opstand werd evenwel neergeslagen en Chilembwe werd gedood. In Nyasaland heerste net zoals in de naburige gebieden een apartheidsregime. Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd het Nyasaland African Congress (NAC) opgericht met als doel zelfbestuur en (later) onafhankelijkheid. In 1953 ging het land deel uitmaken van de Federatie van Rhodesië en Nyasaland. Het in 1958 opgerichte Malawi Nationale Congres (MNC) verzette zich tegen deze federatie, die in 1963 weer uiteenviel. In datzelfde jaar kreeg Nyasaland zelfbestuur onder de naam Malawi.
