Sie überschneidet sich inhaltlich mit der Ernährungswissenschaft und der Biochemie. In der Tierzucht sollen ernährungsphysiologische Forschungen die Tierernährung, Futtermittel und Nährstoffbedarfsnormen für Nutztiere optimieren. In der Medizin liegt besonderes Augenmerk auf Stoffwechselkrankheiten, Mangel- und Fehlernährungen sowie krankheitsbedingte Unterernährung.
