Nueva Loja (also known as Lago Agrio, after Sour Lake, Texas) is the capital city of Sucumbíos, in Ecuador. It was founded in the 1960s as a base camp of Texaco. It has a population of 103.000. Nueva Loja is located in central Sucumbíos, in the Amazonian forest, and is one of the most important cities in northeastern Ecuador. Its importance comes from the oil extraction. It is named after Loja as many of the first colonizers came from the Southern Province of Loja.

Nach Probebohrungen im Ölfeld Lago Agrio I, das von Arbeitern der Texaco nach dem Firmensitz Sour Lake in Texas benannt worden war, und dem Bau der ersten Pipeline, begann 1972 die reguläre Ölförderung. In dieser Zeit wurden von der ecuadorianischen Regierung vor allem Bewohner der südlichen Andenregion Ecuadors, insbesondere der Provinz Loja, in der Dürre herrschte, bei Übersiedlung nach Lago Agrio unterstützt. Aus der Ansiedlung der Erdölarbeiter und der übrigen Siedler entstand die Stadt Nueva Loja, die bereits 1979 Hauptstadt des neu eingerichteten Kantons Lago Agrio und 1989 Hauptstadt der neuen Provinz Sucumbíos wurde. Durch die Erdölförderung und die Besiedlung hat der ursprünglich die Gegend überwuchernde tropische Regenwald stark gelitten bzw. wurde vernichtet. Die Umgebung von Nueva Loja hat große Umweltschäden aufzuweisen, die Bodenqualität hat sich z.T. extrem stark verschlechtert, insbesondere aufgrund von Verschmutzung durch Erdöl oder Erdölrückstände. Die vor der Erdölprospektion und Ansiedlung in der Region lebenden indigenen Gemeinschaften der Cofán haben sich in entlegenere Regionen zurückgezogen.

De stad kreeg de naam Nueva Loja van Spaanse kolonisten uit de naburige provincie Loja. De naam betekent dan ook Nieuw Loja. Tegenwoordig wordt de stad echter zelden meer bij de officiële naam genoemd, maar bij de naam Lago Agrio: een letterlijke vertaling van Sour Lake, waar Texaco haar hoofdkantoor heeft. De grote invloed van de olie-industrie in het gebied wordt daarmee duidelijk. Hoewel het gebied een economische opleving doormaakte, leidde het ook tot substantiële ontbossing, vervuiling en het uitsterven van de Tetete-indianen. De Siona, Secoya and Cofán-indianen komen in het gebied nog wel voor. Zij wonen niet in de stad zelf maar in de omliggende gebieden.
