- Notetaking is the practice of recording information captured from a transient source, such as an oral discussion at a meeting, or a lecture. Notes of a meeting are usually called minutes. The format of the initial record may often be informal and/or unstructured. One common format for such notes is shorthand, which can allow large amounts of information to be put on paper very quickly. Notes are frequently written in notebooks, though all sorts of paper may sometimes be used: for instance, some people like to use Post-It notes. Notetaking is an important skill for students, especially at the college level. Many different formats are used to structure information and make it easier to find and to understand, later. Computers, particularly tablet PCs and personal digital assistants (PDAs) are beginning to see wide use as notetaking devices. In some contexts, such as college lectures, the main purpose of taking notes may be to implant the material in the mind; the written notes themselves being of secondary importance. Professional Notetakers provide access to information for people who cannot take their own notes, in particular the Deaf and hearing impaired. Manual notetaking requires pen and paper, while Electronic Notetaking (or Computer-Assisted Notetaking) requires a laptop, often with special notetaking software. Professional Notetakers most frequently work in colleges and universities, but are also used in workplace meetings, appointments, conferences, and training sessions. They are usually educated to degree level. In the UK they are increasingly expected to have a professional notetaking qualification, such as that offered by the Council for the Advancement of Communication with Deaf People (CACDP).

Sie dient zum Beispiel der Erinnerung an zu erledigende Aufgaben oder Termine, oder hilft, umfangreiche Informationen in kurzer Form zu fixieren. Im diplomatischen Verkehr bezeichnet man die kurzen notizähnlichen Niederschriften mündlicher Erklärungen als Aide-mémoire, was aus dem Französischen übersetzt Gedächtnisstütze bedeutet. Besonders geeignet für Notizen ist die Stenographie, wegen ihrer Kompaktheit und Schnelligkeit. Eine berühmte Notizbuchart ist das Moleskine, welches angeblich von berühmten Persönlichkeiten wie Ernest Hemingway, Louis-Ferdinand Céline, Pablo Picasso und Henri Matisse verwendet wurde. Diktiergeräte werden zum Teil auch dazu verwendet, um Notizen mündlich festzuhalten. Eine davon abgeleitete Bedeutung ist die Wahrnehmung eines Objekts oder einer Situation bzw. Zustands durch Jemanden (von etwas/jemandem Notiz nehmen). Der Autor Ludwig Hohl erhob die „Notiz“ zu einer eigenen Literaturgattung: Sein philosophisch-literarisches Hauptwerk Die Notizen umfasst viele hundert notizenhafte Einträge, die immer wieder dieselben Themen umkreisen. - La prise de notes désigne la transcription écrite résumée du langage parlé. Elle est particulièrement utilisée en cours au niveau de l'enseignement secondaire et des études supérieures. Contrairement à la sténographie, elle ne prétend pas retranscrire l'intégralité du discours à l'aide de symboles standardisés, mais sert à noter les principaux axes de l'exposé. Par ailleurs, elle diffère de cette dernière par son unique destinataire, le preneur de notes, qui est libre de choisir ses propres conventions.
- Aide-mémoire (z fr. pomoc dla pamięci) − nota, która jest przekazywana osobiście lub doręczana korespondencyjnie po zakończeniu oficjalnych rozmów (lub podczas ich trwania) przez przedstawicieli służby dyplomatycznej lub wysokiej rangi urzędnika państwowego. Może zawierać stanowisko, zestaw tez, problemów, które były lub będą przedmiotem bardziej szczegółowych negocjacji. Nota ta zawiera nagłówek "Aide-mémoire". O autentyczności treści zawartej w Aide-mémoire zaświadcza osoba wręczająca, dlatego nie ma na niej pieczęci ani podpisu. Podobny charakter ma memorandum.
