- A non-resident Indian (NRI) is an Indian citizen who has migrated to another country, a person of Indian origin who is born outside India, or a person of Indian origin who resides outside India. Other terms with the same meaning are overseas Indian and expatriate Indian. In common usage, this often includes Indian-born individuals (and also people of other nations with Indian ancestry) who have taken the citizenship of other countries. In the Americas, the term East Indian is often used to distinguish people who have originated from the Indian Subcontinent (including people from nations of the Indian subcontinent other than India) from those who are American Indians. A Person of Indian Origin (PIO) is usually a person of Indian origin who is not a citizen of India. For the purposes of issuing a PIO Card, the Indian government considers anyone of Indian origin up to four generations removed, to be a PIO. Spouses of people entitled to a PIO card in their own right can also carry PIO cards. This latter category includes foreign spouses of Indian nationals, regardless of ethnic origin. PIO Cards exempt holders from many restrictions applying to foreign nationals, such as visa and work permit requirements, along with certain other economic limitations. The NRI and PIO population across the world is estimated at over 30 million. As of January 2006, The Indian government has introduced the "Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI)" scheme in order to allow a limited form of dual citizenship to Indians, NRIs and PIOs for the first time since independence in 1947. It is expected that the PIO Card scheme will be phased out in coming years in favour of OCI.

Die indische Regierung betrachtet eine Person, die sich mehr als 180 Tage im Kalenderjahr im Ausland aufhält, als NRI. Mitunter werden mit diesem Begriff, beziehungsweise dem deutschen Wort Auslandsinder, fälschlich auch die als Inder geborenen Personen, die später eine andere Nationalität angenommen haben, oder darüber hinaus auch jene Personen indischer Herkunft, die nie indische Staatsbürger waren, bezeichnet. Als indischstämmige Personen, die keine indische Staatsbürgerschaft haben, fallen sie unter die Bezeichnung Person of Indian Origin (PIO). Die indische Regierung betrachtet Personen mit indischer Abstammung bis zur vierten Generation sowie Ehepartner einer solchen Person oder eines indischen Staatsbürgers als „von indischer Herkunft“ und gibt auf Antrag sogenannte PIO cards aus, die dem Inhaber eingeschränkte staatsbürgerliche Rechte einräumen. Hiervon ausgenommen sind Bürger Pakistans und Bangladeschs. In Folge der Kolonialisierung Indiens durch die Briten leben viele dieser Personen in Großbritannien, den USA, in Kanada, Südafrika, Malaysia, dem Nahen Osten und Australien. Für die indische Regierung sind sie wichtige potentielle Rückkehrer und Investoren, die mit ihren Kenntnissen und ihren Finanzen dem Staat helfen sollen. So gab es 2003 verschiedene Kampagnen in indischen Tageszeitungen. Jährlich in der ersten Januarwoche führt das indische Ministerium für indische Überseeangelegenheiten Auslandsindertage (Pravasi Bharatiya Divas) durch. Auch Bollywoodfilme befassen sich seit den letzten Jahren intensiv mit diesem Themenbereich. Die Gesamtanzahl der NRI/PIOs wird auf etwas 25 Millionen geschätzt. Ihre soziale Struktur ist in den jeweiligen Ländern aus historischen Gründen sehr verschieden.

Cette diaspora, une des plus étendues au monde, compte une vingtaine de millions de personnes d'origine indienne, que l'on regroupe peu à peu dans le GOPIO, acronyme pour Groupment Of People of Indian Origin (Groupment des Peuples de l'Origine Indienne).
