Nocturnus was an American progressive death metal band formed in Tampa, Florida in 1987 by drummer/vocalist Mike Browning. They were known for their science-fiction themed lyrics and use of keyboards, both of which were virtually unknown in extreme metal. Although they were (and still are) relatively obscure, notable bands such as Necrophagist, Theory in Practice, and Children of Bodom have cited Nocturnus as an influence.

Les chants sont souvent modifiés pour donner un aspect plus dur donnant ainsi une impression plus futuriste. Certaine parties ressemble même a un robot qui parle, donnant une nette atmosphère futuriste. Un troisième album "Ethereal Tomb" finit par voir le jour en 2000 pour aboutir à une séparation officielle en 2002. Une réédition des premiers enregistrements est parue en 2003 sous le titre "The Nocturnus Demos".
