Nocturnus was an American progressive death metal band formed in Tampa, Florida in 1987 by drummer/vocalist Mike Browning. They were known for their science-fiction themed lyrics and use of keyboards, both of which were virtually unknown in extreme metal. Although they were (and still are) relatively obscure, important bands such as Necrophagist, Theory in Practice, and Children of Bodom have cited Nocturnus as an influence.

Puis, face à des problèmes de stabilité, le groupe fut annoncé plusieurs fois comme séparé puis reformé jusqu'à la fin des années 90. Les chants sont souvent modifier pour donnée un aspect plus dure donnant ainsi une impréssion plus futuriste. Certaine partit ressemeble même a un robot qui parle donnant une net atmosphére futuriste. Un troisième album "Ethereal Tomb" finit par voir le jour en 2000 pour aboutir à une séparation officielle en 2002. Une réédition des premiers enregistrements est parue en 2003 sous le titre "The Nocturnus Demos".
