During the ceremony a crowd of several hundred people joined the 130 guardsmen at the zoo to hear a citation from King Harald the Fifth of Norway read out, which described Nils as a penguin "in every way qualified to receive the honour and dignity of knighthood".

Lorsque la Garde y retourna en 1972, il réussit à faire adopter un des manchots à la Garde. Celle-ci le nomma alors Nils Olav en l'honneur de leur lieutenant et du Roi de Norvège Olav V. Nils Olav fut élevé au rang de vice-caporal et fut promu chaque fois que la Garde Royale se rendit au Edinburgh Military Tattoo. En 1982 il devint caporal, puis sergent en 1987. Nils Olav mourut peu de temps après cette promotion. La relève fut alors prise par Nils Olav II, un autre manchot du zoo lui ressemblant. Il fut promu en 1993 au rang de sergent-major du régiment. Le 17 août 2005, il est élevé au rang de colonel. Il est le premier manchot à détenir ce rang dans l'armée norvégienne. Une statue en bronze d'un mètre vingt est alors érigée à son effigie au zoo d'Édimbourg. L'inscription présente près de la statue dit : « Au zoo d'Édimbourg et au peuple d'Édimbourg en célébration des liens unissant la Garde Royale et l'Édimbourg Military Tattoo ». Une autre statue de Nils est présente à la base militaire de Huseby, à Oslo.
