The Nihonmatsu Shōnentai (二本松少年隊, literally "Nihonmatsu Youth Corps") was a group of around 62 samurai of the Nihonmatsu Domain, aged between 12 and 17, who fought in the Boshin War. Although the roster lists 62 members, a subset of 20 remain famous due to their naming in the unsuccessful defence of Nihonmatsu Castle in 1868, under the command of Kimura Jūtarō. Sixteen of these, including Kimura, died in the defence.

  • 二本松少年隊（にほんまつしょうねんたい）とは、 幕末の二本松藩において戊辰戦争に出陣した12歳から17歳の少年兵部隊のこと。戊辰戦争への出陣は12歳や13歳では不可能なのだが、二本松を守りたいと入れ年(年齢をごまかすこと)をして、最小年齢12歳となってしまった。二本松少年隊は藩内各地に出陣した62名を指すが、藩の西洋砲術師範で江戸留学の経験もあった木村銃太郎指揮下の20名が特に有名で、大壇口での戦いにおいて木村をはじめその多くが戦死した。負傷して称念寺にはこばれた者もいたが、やがては息絶えてしまった。これらの出来事は、戊辰戦争における悲劇のひとつとして知られている。 地方の本では、三浦行蔵は倒れていたところを農民に助けられたが、仲間も戦死し、隊長も死んでしまったのに 生き残った自分が情けないと悔やみ、その農民が少し目を離したすきにいなくなっていたという。 二本松藩主丹羽氏の菩提寺でもある大隣寺に戦死者16名の墓所がある。また二本松城跡である霞ヶ城公園には群像彫刻や顕彰碑が立っている。 陣羽織二本松少年隊大壇口出陣者名(指揮下の20名) 隊長 　木村 銃太郎　 副隊長　二階堂 衛守 12歳　☆久保 豊三郎 13歳　　高橋 辰治　　徳田 鉄吉　　岡山 篤次郎　☆大島 七郎　☆小川 安次郎　　遊佐 辰弥 14歳　　成田 才次郎　　木村 丈太郎　 15歳　　奥田 午之介　☆久保 鉄次郎　☆木滝 幸三郎　☆三浦 行蔵　　 16歳　　田中 三治　　根来 梶之助　　上崎 鉄蔵　　 17歳　　大桶 勝十郎　　中村 久次郎　　小沢 幾弥　　岩本 清次郎 ☆は負傷者を示す。また、12歳の久保 豊三郎と、15歳の久保 鉄次郎は兄弟であり、兄鉄次郎は病弱でありながらも、「豊三郎までがいったのに、おめおめとねている訳にはいきません」と言って母親を振り切り、弟のあとに続いたという。その後2人は負傷して称念寺に運ばれたが、おたがいのことを知らないままに12月、弟の豊三郎が先に亡くなったとされている。
