Nikkei also owns TV Tokyo and Nikkei CNBC, which provides coverage of the Japanese market during trading hours and rebroadcasts CNBC during off-hours and weekends. The company was founded in 1876 when it started publication of the Nihon Keizai Shimbun. The Nihon Keizai Shimbun is Nikkei's flagship publication and the world's largest financial newspaper, with a daily circulation exceeding 3 million.

Daneben werden noch weitere Aktienindizes veröffentlicht, darunter seit Oktober 1982 der Nikkei 300, ein nach Kapitalisierung gewichteter Index von wichtigen Dividendenpapieren, die in der Ersten Sektion an der Tokioter Börse gehandelt werden. Zu Beginn im Jahr 1982 hatte dieser Index den Wert 100.
