After their success waned in the late 1980s, the band split up in 1989 and its members pursued other musical endeavours including both group and solo efforts. Several members released an album without original singer Jack Blades in 1995, but the band soon re-united to release two new albums in the latter half of the decade. Despite the departure of original keyboardist Alan Fitzgerald and guitarist Jeff Watson, the band has continued to tour into 2008 and remains very popular in Asian countries including Japan.

Ses membres fondateurs sont Jack Blades (basse, voix), Kelly Keagy (batterie, voix), Jeff Watson (guitare), Brad Gillis (guitare) et Alan Fitzgerald (clavier). Lors de la sortie de son premier album (Dawn Patrol, 1982), le groupe obtient un succès considérable avec la chanson « Don't Tell Me You Love Me ». Mais c'est le deuxième album (Midnight Madness), lancé l'année suivante, qui propulse vraiment le groupe au sommet des palmarès grâce à la ballade « Sister Christian », qui demeure un classique du genre. Le troisième album (Seven Wishes, 1985) connaît aussi un succès certain, notamment grâce aux pièces « Sentimental Street » et « Goodbye ». Tout au long des années 80, le groupe se produit lors de longues tournées qui l'amènent partout aux États-Unis, mais aussi un peu partout dans le monde, notamment au Japon où son succès est particulièrement soutenu. Quelques autres albums suivront : « Big Life » (1987), « Man In Motion » (1989), « Live in Japan » (1990), « Greatest Hits » (1990). En 1996, après une pause et certains autres projets musicaux (albums solos, Damn Yankees), les membres de la formation Night Ranger se réunissent au Japon pour une série de concerts qui remportent un grand succès. Ils retournent alors en studio et lancent un nouvel album (Neverland, 1997) qui obtient du succès grâce à la ballade « Forever All Over Again ». Le groupe recommence par la suite à donner des spectacles en Amérique du Nord. En 1998, un autre album paraît (Seven), et Night Ranger est à nouveau sur la route chaque année. En 2005 paraît une compilation complètement remixée des plus grands succès du groupe (« Hits, Acoustic and Rarities », qui comprend notamment une version acoustique de Sister Christian). À ce jour, le groupe Night Ranger demeure actif : en plus d'offrir une multitude de concerts chaque année (plus de 70 en 2008, dont un à Cuba), il se produit à plusieurs reprises au Japon. Près de 30 ans après sa formation, il a lancé un nouvel album studio intitulé « Hole In The Sun » en août 2007, suivi quelques mois plus tard d'un nouvel album double en concert, intitulé « Rockin' Shibuya ». Au fil des ans, deux membres fondateurs (Jeff Watson et Alan Fitzgerald) ont quitté la formation, mais Jack Blades, Kelly Keagy et Brad Gillis sont toujours de la partie, ce qui fait du groupe l'un des plus durables du monde de la musique rock, aux côtés de quelques autres vétérans de la même époque (Aerosmith, AC/DC, etc.).
