Sir Nicolas Dusan Bratza, styled The Hon. Mr Justice Bratza, is a Judge of the European Court of Human Rights. Sir Nicolas was born in 1945. He studied law at Brasenose College, Oxford. Qualifying as a barrister, he was appointed Junior Counsel to the Crown and, later, Queen’s Counsel. In 1993, he was elected a Bencher of Lincoln’s Inn and appointed a Recorder of the Crown Court. He was appointed a High Court judge in 1998.

He has been a Vice-President of the Court since 19 January 2007 He is a member of the Advisory Council and former Vice-Chairman of the British Institute of Human Rights, a member of the Advisory Board of the British Institute of International and Comparative Law and a member of the Editorial Board of the European Human Rights Law Review. His father was Milan Bratza, the famed Serbian concert violinist who settled in London after the First World War, and his mother came from the Russell family, who have produced three generations of Law Lords. In June 2007, he received the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, by the University of Glasgow.
