Nice conta com 347.900 habitantes (2005) e sua área metropolitana tem 968.903 habitantes (2007). Depois do Congresso de Viena, voltou a fazer parte do reino da Sardenha, um dos que formaram a Itália moderna. Foi definitivamente anexada à França em 1860, por meio do tratado de Villafranca. Algumas placas indicam, além da forma francesa Nice, a forma provençal Nissa.
