Edouard "Newsy" Lalonde was a Canadian professional ice hockey forward in the National Hockey League (NHL) and a professional lacrosse player, regarded as one of hockey's and lacrosse's greatest players of the first half of the 20th century and one of sport's most colourful characters. He played for the Montreal Canadiens -- considered to be the original "Flying Frenchman" -- in the National Hockey Association and the NHL. He also played for the WCHL's Saskatoon Sheiks.

He played for the Montreal Canadiens -- considered to be the original "Flying Frenchman" -- in the National Hockey Association and the NHL. He also played for the WCHL's Saskatoon Sheiks. Before playing professional ice hockey, he worked in a newspaper plant, where he acquired the "Newsy" moniker. The image on the right is of Lalonde, in the 1910–11 season and the second version of the Montreal uniform; the "CH" sweater was still almost a decade away.

En 1950, lors d'un sondage auprès de la population canadienne, il fut considéré pour le titre de meilleur joueur du demi-siècle, honneur qui échut finalement à Howie Morenz. Cependant, le Temple de la renommée du hockey, l'a nommé le joueur le plus dominant du premier quart de siècle. Il était un marqueur naturel qui pouvait jouer à tout poste et son style de jeu lui valut une grande renommée à travers la ligue. Souvent, de sa zone, il récupérait le disque et s'élançait d'un bout à l'autre de la patinoire en déjouant tout le monde sur son passage. On le reconnaît surtout pour ce fameux style fluide. Comme Howie Morenz avait le même style, on se permit même la comparaison entre les deux joueurs.
