Since 1993, it has been owned by media mogul Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation, which had owned it previously from 1976 to 1988 before being forced to sell it because of government restrictions on the press. It is the sixth-largest newspaper in the U.S. by circulation. Its editorial offices are located at 1211 Avenue of the Americas, in New York City, New York.

Het oude formaat veranderde in het tabloidformaat, er werd zeer veel aandacht besteed aan sport, roddel, (seks-)schandalen en de "sterren", de krant kreeg een uitbundiger opmaak en ging als totaal enorm op het Britse boulevardblad The Sun lijken, de krant die Murdoch daarvoor eind jaren zestig had gecreëerd en waarop de nieuwe Post grotendeels op gebaseerd was. De oplage van de krant steeg onmiddellijk en hij is sinds 2006 de elfde krant van de VS.
