- New York Cosmos war zwischen 1971 und 1985 ein Fußballverein in der Nordamerikanischen Fußballliga North American Soccer League (NASL). Der Fußballverein ist vor allem durch die Verpflichtung einiger internationaler Spieler, darunter Weltstars wie Pelé und Franz Beckenbauer, bekannt geworden. Beckenbauer wechselte 1977 für die damalige Rekord-Ablösesumme von zwei Millionen Dollar vom FC Bayern München zu Cosmos. August 2010 wurde im Rahmen der Copa NYC Finals im Corona Park von New York die Neugründung des Vereins durch Pelé bekanntgegeben. Ziel des Vereins sei es, in der Major League Soccer zu spielen. Mitte Januar 2011 gab der Klubvorsitzende Paul Kernsley bekannt, dass der ehemalige Fußballprofi Eric Cantona zukünftig als Sportdirektor tätig sein werde. "Ich werde alles dafür tun, damit wir wieder die Nummer eins in den Vereinigten Staaten und dann einer der besten Klubs der Welt werden", versprach der bei Manchester United zum "Spieler des Jahrhunderts" gewählte Cantona bei seiner Vorstellung.
- The New York Cosmos (simply the Cosmos in 1977–1978) were an American soccer club based in New York, New York and its suburbs. The team played home matches in three stadiums around New York before moving in 1977 to Giants Stadium, East Rutherford, New Jersey, where it remained for the rest of its history. Founded in 1971, it competed in the North American Soccer League (NASL) until 1984 and was the strongest franchise in that league, both competitively and financially – based largely around its backing by Warner Communications President Steve Ross, which enabled it to sign internationally famous stars such as the Brazilian forward Pelé, Italian striker Giorgio Chinaglia and the West German sweeper Franz Beckenbauer. The acquisition of these foreign players, particularly Pelé, made the Cosmos into what Gavin Newsham called "the most glamorous team in world football", and contributed to the development of soccer across the United States, a country where it had previously been largely ignored. However, as the Cosmos declined following Pelé's retirement, so did the NASL. Attendances fell, the league's television deal was lost and it finally folded in 1984. Although the Cosmos attempted to operate as an independent team in the Major Indoor Soccer League, attendances were so low that the club withdrew without completing a season. The Cosmos folded, though the team's youth camps continued to operate under the Cosmos name and label, run by the franchise's former general manager, G. Peppe Pinton. The Cosmos name remained very well known, even after it stopped competing. Numerous attempts were made to revive it during the 1990s and 2000s, most notably as an Major League Soccer (MLS) club. Seeking to retain the Cosmos' heritage, Pinton refused to sell the name and image rights, believing that MLS would not honor them. However, following a change of attitude by MLS towards the NASL's legacy and the revival of several former NASL names, Pinton sold the rights to an international, English-based consortium in August 2009. A new Cosmos team was announced a year later, in August 2010, by the group's honorary president, Pelé. The new team intends to become an MLS expansion franchise representing metropolitan New York.

Des équipes de jeunes perdurèrent sous le nom Cosmos, dirigées par l'ancien manager général du club G. Peppe Pinton. Le nom de Cosmos resta très connu, même après l'arrêt de la compétition. Plusieurs tentatives furent menées pour le faire renaitre durant les années 1990 et 2000, principalement comme franchise de la Major League Soccer (MLS). Mais, voulant préserver l'héritage du Cosmos, Pinton refusa de vendre le nom et les droits d'image, pensant que la MLS ne les prendrait pas assez en considération. Suite à un changement d'attitude de la MLS envers l'héritage de la NASL, et du fait de la renaissance de plusieurs autres anciens noms de la NASL, Pinton vendit finalement les droits à un consortium britannique en août 2009. Une nouvelle franchise fut annoncée un an plus tard, en août 2010, par Pelé, président honoraire du groupe; représentant le Grand New York, elle doit intégrer la MLS en 2013. L'équipe jouait ses matches à domicile dans trois stades différentes autour de New York avant de déménager en 1977 au Giants Stadium, à East Rutherford dans le New-Jersey (banlieue de NYC) jusqu'à sa disparition.
