- NPO (Netherlands Public Broadcasting) is the name used in the Netherlands to refer to the country's public-service broadcasting system as a whole; it is used, for instance, as the name of the joint web portal coordinated by the NPO on behalf of all the broadcasting associations. NPO is confusingly a part of Nederlandse Omroep Stichting (NOS). Public-service broadcasting in the Netherlands is provided jointly by a number of broadcasting organizations under the tutelage of NPO. On 4th July 2009, they started broadcasting channels in HD 1080i. Unlike most other countries' public broadcasting organizations – which are either national corporations, federations of regional public-law bodies, or governmental and member-based institutions with their own channels and facilities – those in the Netherlands are member-based broadcasting associations that share common facilities. This arrangement has its origins in the system developed in the Netherlands early in the 20th century and known as pillarisation. Under this system the different confessional and political streams of Dutch society (Catholics, Protestants, socialists, etc. ) all had their own separate associations, newspapers, sports clubs, educational institutions, and also broadcasting organizations. The stated aim is to give a voice to each social group in the multicultural diversity that is Dutch society. The number of hours allocated to each broadcaster corresponds, roughly, to the number of members each organization is able to recruit (although this does not apply to NOS and NPS – see below). Since 2000, the system has been financed out of general taxation rather than from broadcast receiver licence fees. This is supplemented by a limited amount of on-air advertising, which has been allowed since 1967. The broadcasting organizations produce programmes for fifteen television channels – Nederland 1, Nederland 2, Nederland 3, and twelve digital channels on a variety of subjects, available through Nederland 24 – and seven national radio networks – Radio 1, Radio 2, 3FM, Radio 4, Radio 5 (for several years dubbed 747 AM and Radio 747), Radio 6 (the former commercial radio station known as the ConcertZender), and FunX.

Sie sind oft in die Rechtsform eines Vereins oder einer Stiftung gefasst. So repräsentieren manche Sender religiöse Gemeinschaften, andere vertreten beispielsweise gewerkschaftliche Ziele. Das Rahmenprogramm liefert die Nederlandse Omroep Stichting (NOS), deren gesetzlicher Auftrag die Bereitstellung von Nachrichten, Sport und allgemeiner Information ist.

NPO se encarga de la coordinación de las mismas y de garantizar un funcionamiento y distribución de programas correcto. A diferencia de la mayoría de entes públicos de radio y televisión, en Holanda se emplea una estructura de pilarización, por la que los diferentes sectores de la sociedad nacional (católicos, protestantes, doctrinas políticas, etc. ) tenían sus propias asociaciones, entre ellas sus propias organizaciones de radiodifusión. El Gobierno Holandés estableció este sistema en base a la "diversidad multicultural" del país, y se han ido añadiendo nuevas organizaciones al ente con el paso del tiempo. Las organizaciones producen programas para 4 cadenas de televisión y 7 emisoras de radio. NPO pertenece a la UER desde su fundación en 1950.

De omroepverenigingen worden onderscheiden in: aspirant-omroep (heeft minimaal 50.000 leden en probeert de B-status te bereiken), B-status (omroep met 150.000-300.000 leden) en A-status (omroep met meer dan 300.000 leden). Het Nederlands Instituut voor Beeld en Geluid beheert het archief van alle programma's. Programma's van de Nederlandse publieke omroepen zijn niet auteursrechtelijk beschermd, tenzij het auteursrecht uitdrukkelijk is voorbehouden. De STER oftewel de Stichting Etherreclame verzorgt de reclame-inkomsten. Publieke omroepen ontvangen inkomsten van het rijk, de STER-inkomsten en inkomsten van de leden. Twee leden van de Raad van Bestuur van de Nederlandse Omroep Stichting zetelen in het bestuur van de Stichting Etherreclame. Gezamenlijk zorgen zij voor uitzendingen en informatievoorziening via, zoals men het zelf noemt, verschillende platforms. De belangrijkste zijn: televisie, radio, internet, omroepbladen en evenementen.
