The NetWare Core Protocol (NCP) is a network protocol used in some products from Novell, Inc. It is usually associated with the NetWare operating system, but parts of it have been implemented on other platforms such as Linux, Windows NT and various flavors of Unix. TCP/IP and IPX/SPX (obsoleted, technical support is provided only for NetWare platform) are the supported underlying protocols. TCP/IP implementations use TCP/UDP port 524 and rely on SLP for name resolution. Novell eDirectory uses NCP for synchronizing data changes between the servers in a directory service tree.

Es wurde für das Netzbetriebssystem NetWare entwickelt und ist ein verbindungsorientiertes, proprietäres Protokoll, dass auf SPX/IPX aufbaut. Im OSI-Modell reicht es von der Sitzungschicht über die Darstellungs- bis zur Anwendungsschicht. Es dient dem Datenaustausch zwischen Betriebssystem-Netware-Client und Netware-Server. Mit der Socket-Nummer 0x0451 überträgt es die Daten der Datei-, Druck- und Verbindungsdienste. Ab Netware 5 kann NCP auch über TCP/IP transportiert werden; IPX ist nicht mehr nötig. Im Gegensatz zu TCP/IP besitzt es keine Fenstergröße - das heißt, jedes Paket muss einzeln bestätigt werden. Mit der Einführung des Burst Mode Protocol (BMP) als speziellen NCP-Pakettyp hat Novell den Durchsatz vom NCP gesteigert. Jetzt können bis 64kB ohne weitere Anforderung empfangen werden.
