The National Rugby League (NRL) is the top league of professional rugby league football clubs in Australasia. The NRL competition (sometimes referred to as the Telstra Premiership for sponsorship purposes) is contested by sixteen teams, fifteen of which are based in Australia with one based in New Zealand. It is the Southern Hemisphere's elite rugby league championship and the most attended rugby competition in the world.

It is the Southern Hemisphere's elite rugby league championship and the most attended rugby competition in the world. The National Rugby League is the present-day embodiment of Australia's top-level domestic rugby league competition, which in turn grew from Sydney's club competition, and which has been running continuously since 1908. The NRL formed in the aftermath of the 1990s' Super League war as a joint partnership between the sport's already-existing national governing body, the Australian Rugby League (ARL) and News Corporation-controlled Super League, after both organisations ran premierships parallel to each other in 1997. NRL matches are played throughout Australia as well as New Zealand from Autumn until Spring, culminating in a Grand Final match, traditionally one of Australia's most popular sporting events, to determine the season's premiers. Each year the NRL champions play an additional game against the premiers of the European Super League competition in the World Club Challenge.

Née en 1998 de la fusion de deux compétitions, l'Australian Rugby League (ARL) et la Super League d'Australie, elle fonctionne sur un système de franchises dans un championnat fermé c'est-à-dire qu'il n'y pas de relégation. Elle est composée de seize franchises toutes australiennes à l'exception d'une qui est néo-zélandaise. Elle se déroule en deux phases, tout d'abord un championnat où toutes les franchises disputent 25 matchs puis d'un tournoi final où les huit meilleurs formations prennent part à un play-off selon le McIntyre Final Eight System qui mène à une finale où est désigné le championnat de la compétition. Le vainqueur dispute ensuite le World Club Challenge opposé au vainqueur de la Super League. Le tenant du titre est Melbourne Storm (2007). La NRL est l'une des compétitions sportives les plus populaires d'Australie, en termes d'affluences, d'audiences TV et de merchandising.
