This game is held at a pre-selected site which is usually a city that hosts an NFL team. Commercials during the Super Bowl tend to be quite popular among the general public. Selected all-star players from both the AFC and NFC meet in the Pro Bowl, held in Honolulu, Hawaii; up to and including 2009, this game took place the weekend after the Super Bowl. In 2010, it will take place the week prior to the Super Bowl, in Miami Gardens, Florida.

Liga byla založena v roce 1920 jako American Professional Football Association a prvního ročníku se zúčastnilo 11 týmů. V současnosti ligu tvoří 32 týmů, které jsou rozděleny do dvou konferencí o šestnácti týmech - American Football Conference (AFC) a National Football Conference (NFC). V konferencích se pak týmy dělí do čtyř divizí o čtyřech týmech. Ligový kalendář začíná obvykle v září, a každý tým v něm sehraje 16 zápasů. Jelikož americký fotbal je jedním z nejoblíbenějších sportů v USA, zápasy NFL patří mezi nejsledovanější události. Zápasy jsou pravidelně vysílany předními americkými televizními stanicemi jako jsou CBS, FOX, NBC a ESPN. Liga byla založena v roce 1920 jako American Professional Football Association a prvního ročníku se zúčastnilo 11 týmů.
